Facebook has long been the "cool" social media platform outlasted its peers from the mid-2000's. It was the central hub for a whole generation to meet, plan events, and archive their youths. But somewhere along the way, Facebook turned into a toxic, political wasteland filled with hate speech and disinformation. How did this platform go from an innocuous social networking site to tearing apart the social fabric of society? VICE producer Zeke Spector goes down the rabbit hole to ask if we should be afraid of Facebook. @InigoMontoya-3 years ago I was skeptical of facebook from the beginning. I knew no company could survive without selling something. I assumed early that it was selling information even here on youtube, i purposely search opposing opinions. Anytime i fall into confirming my biases, i can see the algorithm attempting to manipulate me.
the only way to combat the manipulation is to intentionally search away from itsas a result, i getthat are in no way congruent. I getfrom the far left to the far right, and everything in between. It is the only way to get all the available news. I figure if i get beau of the fifth column and ben shapiro recommended at the same time, i am one step ahead of the algorithm.
i cannot explain why i sometimes getfor things like ice fishing videos that are ten years old and only have 12 other views

@mahmoudyahya17383 years ago I never got attracted to the magic of facebook, its super hyped with no real reason. Its uses are just the facebook chat that is easy because many people the problem with facebook and other social media websites is the tendency of people to abuse it by competing who would appear more cool and everyone starts documenting most of their life into diaries and photos on facebook to make oneself appear more appealing and attractive. This is the toxic part about it. Its rarely used for deep logical benefecial communication, its more designed for superficial displays.
another big problem with social media is that every body is more hooked online to try to seem cool instead of meeting around and sharing experiences, ideas and common projects in real life

@DeputatKaktus3 years ago Have been inactive on fb for about 6 months now. I only check in every once in a blue moon.
i think it has been problematic ever since zuck decided sure - there were brief light and truly enjoyable moments among my own fb circle. But for the most part, negativity drowned out everything else. In the end i was just so sick and tired of it all. It put me in a foul mood permanently. At some point it just clicked and my mind went you know what - i just dont care anymore. None of this is worth it. Not worth my time and energy. I am just over this. I do not have enough spoons in a day to deal with this. Time to bow out quietly.
i may have a lot fewer interactions with people now but the ones i have are also ones i really value and appreciate. Problem is, it can be lonely at times and it makes me feel left out which is not so nice. But whenever i log back in to see if i have any messages, it usually takes 10 seconds of feed scrolling tops and i remember why i am not active anymore.
so if anyone asks how fucked up facebook is, the answer is yes. It is pretty much fubar if you ask me.
it may have started as a good idea. But then money got involved, people got greedy, and idiots happened. And that was the end of it

@jn846last year Good video and thank you for making it. I learned about a few things i didn' t know. Overall i actually love facebook, but there are things i hate about the worst things about fb to me clearly was the russian trolls and bots, and other nefarious actors. Fb was way to slow in clamping down on that. But then i' ve been banned for innocuous statements. When replying to a thread from the bill maher fan page, bill had done a segment about the people who scammed money from the government for pandemic subsidies to keep people from going broke. Yet many people scammed the government for money they didn' t need and did not qualify for. I made the simple comment about them calling themamericans" omg i got banned for 12 days just for those 2 words which were not only entirely appropriate but really putting the situation rather mildly. Another time i referred to a raucous trump boat rally as " ugly- bam you violated community standards and are banned for 6 days. Again a comment which used a literary reference to the book and movie which starred marlon brando of all things.
so i learned the algorithm is looking for any negative term followed directly by the wordto me that' s a very lame and inexcusable implementation of technology. It' s like they have someone in 8th grade writing the filter rules. That was my first ban, the other one came after and why it was longer. Then they threaten you will much longer bans. I use fb for a lot of positive interactions and to get banned from it in today' s world would be akin to having your phone shut off back in the old days. It really is a disturbance to my ability to communicate and connect with people i know and love and care about!

@_J.P._3 years ago Before facebook only a group of people had a voice and the rest just went along with the voice they liked and/or they could get along with. Almost nobody now with facebook everyone has a voice and people go along with anything they currently like or believe to be true even without any fact checking. And even if you can negate something not correct it doesn' t get you far. Once a person decided to belive something they simply just do that. Even when it isn' t correct. The lie is not an enemy. You are the enemy. Because you are trying to change what they believe. Period.
the silver line here (not really) is that the majority of people have always been dumb by their choice. Being dumb and/or simple makes your life easier. But thanks to social media we are able to hear, read or see those people a lot more as we did before facebook. The only problem is that those people can be easily shifted into almost any direction you want. All it takes is just the right way to do it. To do it in a way they will believe it and almost blindly follow you. And that is the real danger here
