Stroke: When to suspect it? How to treat it? (In Urdu/Hindi) Stroke or Cerebrovascular Accident has been gradually increasing in general populations around the world. Prompt and rapid recognition of signs and symptoms of Stroke can have significant impact on patient's outcome. Following symptoms should make patient or relatives or friends suspect Stroke: 1. Sudden onset of one sided weakness of either face, arm or legs 2. Sudden onset loss of vision of one or both eyes 3. Difficulty in speaking or change of speech 4. Sudden onset of severe headache 5. Loss of balance or coordination 6. Severe sudden headache 7. Sudden onset of dizziness Stroke receiving or dedicated hospitals or centers need to follow internationally recognized guidelines or Key Performance Indicators (KPI) such as the following: 1. General assessment of patient within 10 minutes of arrival to the Department 2. Neurological assessment within 25 minutes 3. CT head to be performed within 25 minutes 4. CT head reported or interpreted within 45 minutes 5. Decision for treatment and treatment given within 60 minutes 6. Patient admitted to stroke ward within 3 hours Adherence to the above KPIs have improved outcome of patients suffering from Stroke. Treatment options include fibrinolytic therapy within 3 or 4.5 hours and Endovascular therapy within 6 hours of onset of symptoms.
